Julie Summers, author of Jambusters, the book that inspired the ITV series, Home Fires, is guest author at The Watermill Book Club
Tuesday 16 June at 1.30pm
Home Fires, the new ITV drama about the women who kept the home fires burning during the Second World War starring Francesca Annis and Samantha Bond, was inspired by the work of The Watermill’s guest author, Julie Summers. Julie will talk about her book Jambusters at the theatre’s Book Club on Tuesday 16 June at 1.30pm.
The Second World War was the WI’s finest hour. Jambusters tells the story of the minute and idiosyncratic details of everyday life during the Second World War. Making jam, making do and mending, gathering rosehips, keeping pigs and rabbits, housing evacuees, setting up canteens for the troops, knitting, singing and campaigning for a better Britain after the war: all these activities played a crucial role in war time. Julie’s illustrated talk will bring the details of this extraordinary contribution to life.
Describing her involvement in taking the story from the book to the screen Julie says: ‘My role has been that of historical consultant and I attended a three day story-lining meeting in April at which I provided cake and historical facts, while the script writers and executive producer came up with the stories and the drama.’
Julie describes herself as a biographer and historian but the most important thing for her is to be a story teller.
