Although it is important to note that there are many different types of headache, one of the most common is known as a cervicogenic headache, which affects up to 18% of the population.
A cervicogenic headache basically means head pain that originates from the neck and base of the skull. There are a number of different causes for these headaches, but the most common include previous trauma, repetitive movements or prolonged postures. Over time, these factors cause dysfunction particularly to the top 3 vertebrae in the neck and their surrounding tissues. This dysfunction then causes a referral pattern to the skull, as the nerves that supply the upper neck structures, also supply the skin overlying the head, forehead and the backs of your eyes and ears.
So how can osteopathy help?
- Joint release and mobilisation to the upper neck.
- Massage and stretching techniques.
- Prescribe appropriate exercises.
- Advice on work and sleeping postures.
