Travellers can be caught out by the small print of travel insurance documents. Things that may void cover have been revealed

Travellers can be caught out by the small print of travel insurance documents. Things that may void cover have been revealed by travel insurance comparison website Gocompare.com, published in a Leicester Mercury article online. Europe EHIC Services have commented on the report.

Gocompare.com released a list of 10 things that can make your insurance void, with some more obvious than others. If you do not disclose an existing medical condition – such as nervous, mental or emotional disorders – when getting a quote than this will be held against you further down the line. Travelling against medical advice, failing to take prescribed medication or recommended medication for certain countries.

Illegal and reckless behaviour will also remove the hope of getting compensated. This can include the unauthorised use of a swimming pool past opening hours as well as climbing on walls regardless of their height. Some sports and adventurous activities aren’t covered along with incidents after ‘excessive alcohol consumption’.

You must also take valid visas and other documentation with you to a particular destination and take all reasonable precautions in regards to avoiding injury, illness and theft among other things. Claimants cannot do any physical labour, paid or unpaid work and visit volatile destinations. It may be problematic claiming when your travel has been paid by using loyalty points or air miles, too.

A spokesperson for Europe EHIC Services released a statement in response to the list: “When planning to go abroad in Europe holidaymakers need to look very carefully at the terms and conditions of their travel insurance. Not doing thorough checks could result in costly penalties and may also risk people’s well-being. Ensuring you have full travel insurance as well as a valid EHIC are more essential than taking sun cream.

“There’s no point turning a blind eye to the perils of inadequate travel insurance as it will leave you out of pocket and might also harm your health. Visit our website to get your EHIC today, or visiting a NHS facility to pick one up.”
