Local nursery and preschool, Abacus in Newbury, recognises the ongoing challenge of dental care, especially during the Easter Period when there are so many sugary treats around. To help educate their children in good tooth management and make them more aware of the dangers of too much sugar in their diet, the nursery decided to hold its very first Tooth Week, which too0k place on the 20-24th April.
During the Tooth Week the nursery staff focused on a range of fun ‘toothy’ activities including making their own toothpaste, seeing what happens to real teeth when left in a sugary fizzy drink and the effect that drinks and juices have on hard boiled eggs left in the liquid for a length of time. The children also made paper Mache teeth and completed tooth brushing charts. The nursery was visited by a local practising dentist who will talked to the children about their teeth and how to look after them properly.
An NHS Oral Hygiene activity pack was used at the nursery during role play activities including the inflatable dentist’s chair and pop up back drop. The dentist also got the children to examine different animal teeth and they were given examples to touch and explore the teeth.
