• All paper poppies collected will be sent to The Royal British Legion, where they will be re-used or recycled
• Only retailer to provide a poppy recycling service
Poppy collectors at Sainsbury’s have been raising funds for The Royal British Legion, the UK’s leading armed forces charity. This year marks the Centenary of the First World War and Sainsbury’s 20th year of support for The Royal British Legion. Colleagues at the supermarket have been raising money too with almost £300 raised for the charity on Halloween with fancy dress, tombola and raffle.
This year Poppy collectors welcomed at the store included 78 year old Ken Pearson from Newbury. Raising money for The Royal British Legion is fairly new to Mr Pearson who commented “I wanted to help because, as an ex-serviceman, I appreciate the support from them”
Following the fundraising success of The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, customers can make their donation go further this year at their local Sainsbury’s. The Newbury store is providing a recycling service to support The Royal British Legion, the UK’s leading Armed Forces charity.
Between 12th and 24th November, customers can choose to recycle their poppies via an in-store collection point. A poppy recycling box will be available at the Newbury Customer Service Desk. All collected poppies will go back to The Royal British Legion to enable them to re-use or recycle them.
Sainsbury’s is the only retailer providing this unique service to support the local environment and provide further support to The Royal British Legion.
Sainsbury’s Store Manager Dene Burton said: “The Poppy Appeal has been a great success this year for fundraising and we’d like to thank everyone who contributed. With this recycling initiative, we wanted to show our customers another way they can support The Royal British Legion to ensure their poppies don’t go to waste. We hope the recycling drive proves a success with our customers”.
Catherine Gowers, Corporate Partnerships Manager at The Royal British Legion added: “We’re delighted to be working with Sainsbury’s again on this recycling initiative. The donated poppies will either be reused or recycled, another great way for Sainsbury’s customers to support us further.”
