If you have ever been networking you probably know what a wounded gazelle feels like when a lion happens to spot you!
Such hunters move around the room preying on the vulnerable trying to sell to them or at least secure a business card they can use to spam you with.
A far better approach is to cultivate relationships just as a farmer cultivates a crop knowing that such regular care will lead to a bumper harvest and in networking terms that means building relationships by visiting the same events regularly and having one-to-one meetings with those who you want to know better.
It is the dilemma when it comes to ad hoc networking versus more organised regular events. If you only see someone infrequently it can be as hard to build a relationship as it is to grow a crop without watering it!
So when remember to be a farmer rather than a hunter and crucially in networking, as in life, it is not who you know. . . but just how well you know them!
