Learn how to keep your brain and body in top working order with next Watermill Book Club guest
Rita Carter
Following a sell-out event last year, scientist, writer and broadcaster Rita Carter returns to The Watermill to give a special series of talks about the power of the human brain. The first of three book clubs, Zap! Supercharging the Electric Brain will take place on Friday 19 September at 1.30pm.
Rita will talk about some of the latest findings from fascinating brain science studies which have uncovered the hidden power of electrical brain stimulants. As the promise of pharmaceutical cures for conditions such as depression and chronic pain evaporates, a new generation of electrical brain stimulants is being hailed as the magic bullet. This technology comes with an additional benefit: it can sharpen our perceptions and enhance our skills. Rita will tell you what these magic devices are and how they work.
On Friday 10 October, Rita will examine the complicated mechanisms that link positive emotions to physical health in Can You Think Yourself Well?
The final event in the series, Being Good Is Good, But Is It Good For You? will take place on Friday 7 November. Rita will discuss latest research indicating that being good can reduce your risk of dying in any one year by 20%. However, it’s not the acts themselves that matter but the complicated social interaction that goes with them. She will look at the desire and benefits of good behaviour and at the minority of people who do not share the desire to be good.
Rita Carter is a science and medical writer and contributes to the Independent, New Scientist, The Daily Mail and The Telegraph. She has twice been awarded the Medical Journalists’ Association prize for outstanding contribution to medical journalism and has written several books including Mapping the Mind and Exploring Consciousness which have sold internationally. A selection of her work will be on sale at the theatre and a book signing will take place after the events.
The Watermill Book Club is open to everyone. The restaurant will be open and serving lunch from 12 noon and afternoon tea will be available after the event. Reservations are to be made with the Box Office when booking tickets.
