The area covered by Penny Post is in the middle of the North Wessex Downs, a tranquil yet stunning landscape of rolling chalk downlands, forests, woods and dales that is designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’.
Many of the Downs offer wonderful panoramic views of unspoilt countryside for miles around. If you like walking, cycling, riding, bird-spotting, fishing, pootling down a canal in a barge – or simply admiring the landscape and enjoying local food and some well deserved rest and relaxation – then this is the place for you.
However there are also many iconic places to visit in the North Wessex Downs includingUffington White Horse, Avebury Stone circle, Savernake Forest and Watership Down. We are lucky to have the world’s oldest working steam engines at the Crofton Pumping Station, Wessex’s only working Windmill at Wilton and Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey). The picturesque market towns and villages across the Downs also have much to offer.
