Cashmere conjures up images of sumptuous luxury, softness, lightness and warmth. It is these qualities that make the finest cashmere so valued and a favourite fashion choice.
The Finest Cashmere
The finest 100% cashmere comes from goats that live in Inner Mongolia where the long hostile winters can reach -40C. These goats develop a thick exterior coat to protect them from the elements and a soft inner coat for warmth. It is the inner coat of hair that cashmere is created from. The goats malt their coats in spring.
The finest cashmere yarn must start with the purest fibre, so quality begins at purchase. The first process of the raw material is to separate the fibres by its three colours, each a different grade of cashmere. Once checked the fibre proceeds to the dying process. The procedure established and still followed by only the best cashmere yarn makers in the world is where the loose fibres are dyed loose rather than as finished yarn. The next stage is spinning.
Cashmere Care
Washing cashmere is a delicate process. To avoid misshapen and shrunken cashmere always hand wash in lukewarm water. Do not wringe the cashmere as this can lead to piling. Gently squeeze the excess water and leave to dry naturally away from direct heat and sunlight. When dry, iron on a cool setting using a damp cloth or steam.
