All charities are equally important to us however, The Brain Tumour Charity is one that, our Publisher, Jackie Osborne has close to her heart. Please read Jackie’s story below:
“2013 was a very emotional year for me as I lost my mother to a brain tumour. My mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour 9 years ago and was given 6 months to live. This was devastating news for me as my mother lived in Brazil and I was travelling back and forth to care and be with her as much as I could. You can imagine how emotionally stressed I was, not only because she was my mother, but my best friend and my source of
inspiration in life.
Whilst taking my mother to various hospitals, I realised that there were lots of people including young children going through the same painful experience. The level of care and attention devoted to every patient by the nurses and doctors were extraordinary despite the lack of funds available, especially in Brazil.
Sadly, not many people are aware of the symptoms that a brain tumour patient has and, unfortunately, sometimes it is too late to do anything to save them from this killer disease.
The medicines are extremely expensive and the government has a limit on how much they can supply per person, causing a massive issue with the ones that cannot afford to continue the treatment. For that reason, I have been supporting The Brain Tumour charities with local events to raise awareness and funds to assist the ones that are less privileged and depend on a community like ours to support them.
My mother’s determination to live lasted 9 years when sadly she passed away. She fought for all these years as she loved life and wanted to encourage others not to see the disease as an end to life. My mother carried on for as long as she could, bringing joy and laughter to everyone.
She was diagnosed with the worst tumour called Glioblastoma Multiforte and her case was so unique that an American television and the University of North Caroline flew to Brazil to interview her as nobody could believe she was surviving for all these years.
Her story is an encouragement to people in general as we all need to remember that together we can help others in the same situation by bringing awareness and support to future research. My aim is to prevent suffering to another beautiful person from this terrible disease.”
