I have just finished my first year of business as FutrSocial. The year is something that I won’t forget in a hurry, It was a year of highs and lows but a year of total discovery. I wanted to write an article on what’s it’s like running a business and share questions and thoughts that were raised during my first year of business to help anyone else who is thinking of starting a business in Newbury.
When is the best time to start?
Now! When I first dreamt of the idea of running a business I was full of ideas, excitement and dreams that I could conquer the world. Those ideas would of stayed with me had I not taken the huge plunge into something that I was unprepared for at best. My background is as a creative and thats one of my main passions and one that is at the core of my business, I was not in anyway ‘trained’ to start work in business, I just had the passion and excitement! Once I knew I wanted to achieve I set about getting to it in anyway I could, from attending business seminars to attending an entrepreneurial mindset group in Thatcham, to reading lots of articles, watching documentaries and meeting lots of people. There is no time like the present to start running a business and there are lots of options in and around Newbury to help you on your way such as: Bigger Brighter Bolder, an entrepenurial mindset organisation and free networking sessions such as Business Biscotti.
What do I need to do first?
To avoid any anxiety about finances or legal issues, contact an accountant and arrange a meeting. During the meeting you will be able to ask as many questions as you like and feel comfortable in the knowledge that there is someone there to help you and deal with issues on your behalf. This can relieve a lot of unnecessary stress and allow you to focus on other issues.
Where can I work from?
Wherever is best for you! You can work from home but also take the opportunity to find different places to work from such as Coffee Shops such as Starbucks and Cafe Nero with high speed broadband to public spaces. Working in a manor that reflects you and what your business is doing helps you focus on the task in hand. Where do you work best? Remember that Reading is 20 minutes away and London is an hour away, there is always another space to work in!
