The continued growth of the Newbury arm of a global engineering company has been marked with the opening of new offices on the Newbury Business Park.
AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, which employs around 29,000 people in about 40 countries, has operated its defence business from Thatcham for more than 11 years.
The business has grown rapidly over that time and now employs more than 130 people working on key contracts for nearby AWE and the nuclear restoration sites at Harwell and Winfrith.
The move to the Newbury Business Park will create room for the expected continued growth of the business and Clive White, President of AMEC’s Clean Energy Europe business, said: “The opening of this new office is entirely consistent with our business model of having a range of offices around the country – we find it’s perfect to be close to our clients to give them the close support they need and it’s also good for diversity in our recruitment.
“We carry out work here for our defence business, together with environmental, consultancy and decommissioning work for a number of clients. It’s a real ‘One AMEC’ office. We provide services ranging from engineering design and assessment, through providing safety case services, environmental and planning support to plant modifications. And the majority of these are highly skilled jobs – engineering, technical and project management professionals.
“And as well as our key customer, AWE, we now support many other customers from this office, including nuclear organisations such as Harwell and Winfrith and a diverse range of other companies, including renewable energy suppliers, local councils and the Crown Estate.
“This isn’t just about business, it’s about what we do for the local community of which we are a part, such as sponsoring local youth clubs and local events, and it’s also pleasing that we have strengthening links with local universities to attract bright young talent from these, both as undergraduate placements and into permanent positions.”
The opening ceremony was performed by Newbury MP Richard Benyon, who said: “This is a really exciting day for the area. I was aware that the company was growing and I am delighted that AMEC has invested in new premises, and continues to recruit to its high calibre team. This is a real vote of confidence in the area by a big, multi-national engineering company.”
