Warm up with a biomass boiler this winter

Biomass boiler

It may still be summer but now is actually the perfect time to start looking at your winter preparations and decide whether you should change your fuel provider and check your boiler.

Heating your home with wood makes environmental and economic sense but with the Government recently announcing that it will pay cashback to homes choosing a biomass boiler as part of the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) there has never been a better time to make the switch.

RHI aims to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies, including biomass boilers, among homeowners through the provision of financial incentives meaning cash back from the Government based on how much heat a biomass boiler produces.

A biomass boiler is a modern, eco-friendly alternative to traditional central heating systems, as it runs on wood-based fuel such as split logs, wood pellets or wood chips which are used to heat a water tank, or accumulator, that supplies the radiators and provides hot water. For every kilowatt hour of heat produced by a biomass boiler, homeowners will receive 12.2p in cash back, helping them not only get back the initial outlay for installation but also to make money in the longer term.

Dick Stephens, from Euroheat the leading biomass solutions provider, explains “The cash back rates for biomass under the RHI are an excellent proposition for homeowners looking to save and even make money. As an example, our Compact 35 kW boiler will earn £4,867 a year, giving a total pay back over the RHI’s seven year lifespan of up to £34,000.

“Apart from the cash back, there’s the fuel savings, particularly for those switching from oil. Many home biomass boilers will be log fuelled – the cheapest way to heat a house with wood. Fuel for a large log boiler costs about £700 a year if bought in bulk, with the equivalent oil system consuming around £3,500. For end users with access to their own wood supply, the savings are even greater.”
