Bridal trends for 2013

2013 will see fashions heading back to the bygone 1930s.

Elegance and grace

By Laura Jones

Moving away from strapless, high necklines, long lace sleeves and delicate cap shoulders are central with lace still the fabric of choice. Illusion necklines, belts and sashes are all becoming more popular as brides look for dresses which offer daytime elegance with evening glamour.

This year we will see more dresses which offer two looks – plain gowns which can be accessorised with a lace jacket or overlay for a demure ‘day’ look only to be replaced later with a belt or sash for a heavier ‘evening’ look.

Key shapes are still A-line but we will see more waisted dresses and simpler designs in delicate fabrics such as tulle and chiffon.

Also growing in popularity are shorter gowns as brides opt for the less formal look and seek something a little different and personal. Look for black and white accents (very art deco) and maybe even pale pinks for the ultimate in feminine chic.

Keeping it simple

Allium Design

By Karen Sopp

The majority of brides and grooms want an informal day in 2013 that is really about friends and family. They want a romantic ambiance with some carefully chosen flowers and styling to compliment them as a couple and their chosen venue.

Flowers this year are about simplicity and scent such as orchids and multi petal roses. Stocks and sweet peas are high on brides’ lists for the 2013 season. Grouping stems for a relaxed seasonal posy bound in lace or tulle. Shades of white and ivory are still the firm favourites with soft pastel muted tones. Vintage is still key with simple flowers allowing for floral prints for bridesmaids. A 1930′s afternoon garden tea party seems to be high on the ‘perfect’ day wish list.

Budget is important and we are moving key pieces from ceremony to the wedding breakfast to allow them to be enjoyed for the whole day. Sustainable options are popular too – plants that can be enjoyed long after the wedding day is over.

Monotones and deco

Kate Bedminster

By Kate Bedminster

2013 cakes are still very much leaning towards the classic vintage look, with sugar lace being a favourite request as well as Art Deco styles encapsulating pure elegance.

There is a definite steering away from brighter hues towards more muted and subtle colours and monotones. Fresh flowers in keeping with the wedding theme still remain the most popular cake adornments. With regards to shapes, the popularity of cupcakes is waning as classic shapes such as round or square stacked return as everything is more stripped back, simple and elegant.
