George goes green

St George’s church in Wash common, Newbury celebrated its recent improvements with an opening ceremony and evening concert on Sunday 9 December.
The local community gathered outside the new glazed thermal lobby for the morning opening ceremony, dedicated by local resident, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey of Clifton. In the evening they were treated to concert, showcasing all the improvements including the solar panelled roof.
The changes come as part of the ’George Goes Green’ campaign which aims to make the church carbon neutral within the next few years. Vicar, Paul Cowan, says “Our aim is for St George’s Church to be a gift and active part of Wash Common life, heated with renewable energy and extensively used by the local community.”
Fundraising is already underway for the third stage of the development which will be to replace their conventional heating with a sustainable solution using ground source heat with under floor heating.
