The legal and safe way to scrap your car

CARS

Motorists are being urged to scrap their cars responsibly, making sure that the scrap metal dealer they choose is licensed.

Increasing numbers of illegal dealers claiming to be licensed are appearing all over Britain; some even go as far as using the Environment Agency’s and DVLA’s logos in their advertising. A lot of these dealers are only displaying a mobile number making it difficult for authorities to take action against them.

What to check

Scrap metal dealers need to hold an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) licence issued by the governing Environment Agency in order to scrap and de-pollute cars. You can take cars, light vans and three-wheel motor vehicles to these facilities where you’ll need to produce a V5 document. You will then be issued with a Certificate of Destruction (CoD).

Without this document there is no guarantee that the car has been scrapped, de-polluted or taken off the DVLA database. This means the car could still be used on the roads and the registered owner could face enforcement action, such as parking fines.

Where to go

To get a quote you can go to scrap car comparison websites such as http://www.cartakeback.com/ or you could donate your car using sites like http://www.charitycar.co.uk/ who will donate the value of your car to charity.

The Environment Agency lists all registered facilities on its website. Go to http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/regulation/65470.aspx/ for more information.
