Survive the sun

We’re either in the middle of a drought or the heavens have opened and everyone is wishing they’d bought a big brolly to shield their table and chairs. These are the months to enjoy!
Your annual climbers, such as Lathyrus matucana, Dolichos Ruby Moon and Ipomaeae, will need to be hardened off and planted in large pots on tripods ready to go out in mid to late June.
Watering during the summer is a crucial part of the garden’s well being. Do not over water and where possible use a watering can without a rose so you can direct the water to the base of the plant. Also, avoid any digging when it is dry otherwise the borders will lose more moisture. Make sure that your mulching is still deep enough, at least 5cm (2 inches).
June
Mow lawn making sure not to cut it too low. Annual climber pots to be hardened off and put out.
July
Summer pruning of both roses and fruit trees. Deadheading perennial borders to encourage more flowering.
August
Sit back and enjoy the garden. Vegetable garden will need some attention.
