The weather in West Berkshire during April is often unpredictable. It can range from warm and breezy to wet and cold. However, early April is a great time to begin planting your gardens. As the weather can move from one extreme to another literally overnight, deciding what to plant can be somewhat of a headache.

So how do you choose?

Annual seeds are often a good choice as they are hardy plants and can grow beneath the surface even in cold weather. They are also able to break through the frosty surface to continue their growth! Types of annuals include Zinnias, Marigolds, Garden Petunias and Verbena. Dormant Perennials can also be planted during April. They won’t grow during the month but, will appear in June when the weather becomes warmer. Other great choices that can be planted in April but will develop later are Dahlia, Lilies and Gladiolas. Planting bulbs that will bloom later is a great way to add variety to your garden in the summer months. Tulips are also a great option and can add lots of beautiful colour to any garden!

So, even though the weather during April can be questionable, planting a garden should not be!
