Is now the time to get an electric car?

With all the buzz, stories and interesting articles concerning electric cars being in the news, is it any wonder why people are curious? Major car manufacturers are now beginning to announce more electric models available for sale – but most of the reviews relate to London use. So is it viable to own an electric car in West Berkshire?

The driving habits of those living in the city and those living in rural areas differ considerably though. The needs of the city commuter require simple cost effective transportation most often used within the city limits. Rarely do they carry more than a person or two and perhaps the odd bag of shopping. The electric car for the urban commuter can be a wise choice economically and environmentally.

However, the needs of those living here in West Berkshire are just the opposite from that of the city resident. Rural drivers require vehicles that can travel a much greater distance between recharging the batteries. Also, the greater distances between current charging points prohibit easy access to charging terminals. This is a major consideration for West Berkshire drivers. If you only drive in the local area, you may be able to rely on just charging the car at home.
However, there are major benefits of owning an electric car, with lower driving costs per mile, which can amount to a considerable saving. Taking advantage of tax incentives can also lower the overall cost of making the purchase.

Another thing to think about is the availability of service and easy repair. Is the nearest dealer capable of servicing an electric vehicle located within a reasonable distance? Once you have asked these questions then you’ll be on the right path to know whether an electric car will be right for you.

I would say probably not quite the right time, but in maybe a year as Fuel costs gradually increase. It is likely the costs of the cars will be lower by then and there may be some charging points installed in West Berks.
