Children are being encouraged to take a little time during the school summer holidays to compose a poem or write a piece on ‘An inspirational woman in your life’. It is part of Newbury Town Council’s way of marking the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage.
“This could be about your Mum, your Aunty, your Teacher or any woman that has inspired you, the choice is yours and we want to hear about this special person,” said Cllr Margo Payne, Mayor of Newbury.
Entries of prose or poems, up to 500 words to be submitted to the Town Hall, Newbury by 5 September 2018. There are two categories, ‘up to 11 years’ and ‘11 – 16 years of age’.
All entries will be on display at the Town Hall during our Heritage Open Day on Saturday 15 September from 10am where the winners will be announced.
Cllr Adrian Edwards, Leader of the Council, said, “Marking the 100th anniversary in this way and encouraging children to take part in the competition will bring this important event to young people’s attention. Although the weather has been great to play outside, this is a good opportunity to enjoy some cool indoor time composing an entry for this competition”.
