One question I get asked a lot when I am treating somebody is, why are you looking at my feet? So why do I? Because your feet are the foundation of our entire body.
Our feet allow us to stand up, walk or run and we expect them to support our weight, act as a shock absorber and take us where we want to go. If the feet are balanced, they absorb the shock that travels through our body, when the feet hit the ground. If the feet are imbalanced, they don’t absorb shock as they should and so it impacts our entire skeletal structure and causes pain in other joints, such as, our knees, hips, pelvis, lower back, right up to our neck. . . surprisingly the feet are often not painful!
One of the main factors that causes the imbalance, is a loss of movement through some of the tiny joints in foot. Many people think that their flat feet (over pronation) or high arches (over supination) are the cause and in some cases it is. However, in most cases, if the foot mobility is good, then the arch shape can be some what irrelevant. There are very few patients, where I may consider the use of permanent orthotics, because of the long term affect their arch height is having on the rest of their body.
