Colleagues from Sainsbury’s Newbury have raised £8,000 so far for Sport Relief.

The store helped to raise money for the nationwide charity event by holding a number of events over the past 4 weeks. Colleagues organised a bake-off and a quiz night, held a penalty shoot-out, raffle, spot the ball competition and sold fundraising scratchcards. They were also joined by local celebrity Keith Chegwin who supported a Sport Relief charity tombola at the supermarket. Community youth groups including local scouts and sports clubs have also raised funds by packing bags for customers at the checkouts.

Staff at the Andover Road Local store in Wash Common also joined in the fundraising challenge by riding an exercise bike at the store

Jonnie Peacock, Paralympic champion and Active Kids Ambassador has showed support for the store. He said:

“Sport Relief gets bigger and better every time, and it has been brilliant to see such enthusiasm for this year’s event from Sainsbury’s colleagues nationwide.

“I’d like to thank all the Sainsbury’s colleagues and customers in Newbury for taking part in fundraising and helping make it another fantastic year for Sport Relief. Everyone knows how much good work Comic Relief charity does in the UK and abroad, so these funds will really make a difference.”

Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives. The money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to support some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in the UK and around the world. 50% of money raised is spent in the UK, supporting projects locally.

Andrew Major, Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Newbury added:

“I’m really proud of my colleagues and the amount of money we raised for Sport Relief this year. I’d like to thank our customers for their support. My colleagues love getting behind the fundraising activities and we know we’re going to make a difference to such a fantastic cause.”

Sainsbury’s is a proud partner of both Comic Relief and Sport Relief and has helped to raise over £100million since 1999.
