BUT FIRST THIS

A MUSICAL HOMAGE TO RADIO 4

By Kathy Clugston and Desmond O’Connor

From Thursday 23 October to Saturday 8 November 2014

Inspired by 9 years of firsthand experience behind the microphone as a newsreader for BBC Radio 4, Kathy Clugston has written a new musical, But First This – A musical homage to Radio 4 which opens at The Watermill Theatre on Thursday 23 October and runs until Saturday 8 November. The witty and lovingly irreverent show is set in the world of Woman’s Hour, The Shipping Forecast, The Today Programme, Big Ben and, of course, the Pips. Internationally renowned and award-winning composer, lyricist and performer Desmond O’Connor has written the music.

Along with the countryside, the monarchy and freedom of speech, Radio 4 is in the top seven Best Things About Britain Today, according to a recent poll. But a new Controller is out to destroy this cherished institution! Can the intrepid team of presenters foil her wicked plan?

Just a Minute, make sure you’re on the Front Row, Today, Saturday Live or Midweek, not at Broadcasting House but at The Watermill Theatre. It’s guaranteed to be livelier than Book at Bedtime. Warning: an in-depth knowledge of Farming Today may be required!

‘The actor playing me will obviously not be quite young enough or sexy enough.’

John Humphrys, presenter Today

‘I feel a West End transfer coming on!’

Kirsty Young, presenter Desert Island Discs

‘Proper brilliant!’

Clare Balding, presenter Ramblings
